Being pregnant, how do you deal with upcoming holidays?
I love holiday season!
Awful. I can only eat limited foods.
It makes me feel suffocated because I can't move freely.
Happy for the new member of the family's arrival!

Pregnancy Health Issue: Constipation

Pregnancy causes a number of health issues due to internal changes in the body. Often times, such health conditions affect the systems of the body, particularly the digestive system. At some point, women experience constipation which refers to the difficulty of excreting bowels.
What causes constipation is the hormone progesterone. This hormone makes the bowel small and hard, thus it would be very painful for the pregnant woman to release it. Because of the amount of progesterone, the intestinal walls are relaxed thus it will be difficult for the food to pass through.
Constipation is a common condition experienced by around 30% of pregnant women. During pregnancy, metabolism slows down and makes passing of food difficult. Although this situation does not harm the baby, the uncomfortable and inconvenient feeling of going in and out of the bathroom makes dealing with this situation a great hassle.
Such difficulty in bowel movement disappears after pregnancy, however if problems still persist, it is advisable that you consult this with your doctor to avoid an even worse condition like hemorrhoid. Hemorrhoids are much painful and difficult. Pregnant women may experience itching sensation around the anus and even the presence of blood during bowel excretion.
When you have a regular bowel movement even before pregnancy, you will notice if your trip to the toilet becomes irregular. For some women, they feel the urge to go the toilet after having their breakfast or sometimes, at night before going to bed. When you’re pregnant, you don’t expect the same schedule for your bowel movement because your body prepares for a human being inside you.
Monitor your bowel movements when you start feeling a bit different about your daily bathroom routine. If you think you’re constipated due to pregnancy, here are some immediate measures you can do to normalize your digestive system:
• Drink plenty of water (around three liters or 6 to 8 glasses daily) so the bowel absorbs enough liquid. If you are not used to drinking just water even before pregnancy, you may include fruit juices in your diet. Prune juice is effective in preventing constipation. You may drink a glass of it every morning.
• Avoid drinking sodas, liquors, coffee and other carbonated drinks.
• Eat fiber rich food, especially in the morning. Foods rich in fiber are cereals, brown rice, oats, squash, beans, oranges, apples, berries, celery, tomatoes, and zucchinis.
• Make an effort to exercise and do some light activities even during pregnancy as this can help excrete unwanted chemicals and toxins in the body through sweat.
• Go directly to the bathroom when you feel like excreting bowel. Never hold up as it will make you feel irritable the whole day.
Again, constipation does not directly affect your baby, but it makes pregnancy uncomfortable, so make every possible way to remedy such health issue with proper exercise and intake of food and water.
